Clash of Cultures, New Religions

Beginning in the 1960s Americans renewed their culture wars over issues of religion. On one side, the participants asked whether there was really a moral foundation to this country without a strong base in religion. On the other side, activists called for the exile of religion from public life, and for the rise of a completely secularized society. On both sides, the warriors used the weapons of the legal system in highly publicized battles over abortion, creationism, and the meaning of "separation of church and state." Since that time, new parties have joined the fray, parties who urge the American polity to reconsider its very understanding of religion.
